In anticipation of an upcoming exhibit, the Milwaukee Art Museum was awarded the 2010 Joyce Award. The Joyce Award, which is annually given to artists of color throughout the Midwest, is pleased to support the upcoming "Theaster Gates" exhibit.

In his self-titled show, Theaster Gates explores the work of pottery maker Dave Drake, a slave who lived in Edgefield, South Carolina. Drake produced alkaline-glazed stoneware pottery in the 1820s through 1860s while living under slavery. Gates exhibit will expand on Drake's work with a multi-media installation including sculpture, video and music.

The Joyce Foundation, which honors dance, music, theater and visual arts, awarded Gates' project with a $50,000 grant.
